Description: Here is your chance to learn (or practice) Tunisian crochet on a beautiful felted bag. This is an easy project and you can have a bag crocheted and felted in just two days! This class will be like two classes in one -- first, you'll learn and practice Tunisian crochet, then you'll get a step-by-step process in felting by hand. You may be intimidated about felting in a washing machine, like me. So, I've been felting in my kitchen sink! Be careful, though! You probably won't want to stop at just one! As you can see, I made three!

Supplies Needed:

Three skeins Patons Classic Merino wool. (Three different colors gives you a nice array. I started off with four skeins in four different colors. I was able to get all three of these bags out of those four skeins. You can also pick other feltable wools for your project. I just prefer Patons Classic Merino because of the large color choices and I like the way it felts up.)
K afghan hook and K regular crochet hook. A K hook is my preferred afghan hook size for most projects. However, since some of you may not have a K afghan hook, and you may have a different size, I stitched one of these bags with an N afghan hook. I'll bet you can't tell the difference! So, I'm going to say that any afghan hook in the range of K through N is suitable. A cro-hook can also be used on this project simply by attaching a rubber band to one end.
Yarn needle. This project has minimal seaming.
Felting. Hot water is needed. Liquid dish detergent. A kitchen sink or pail or bucket, bath tub. Anything at all where you can put hot water. (Not boiling! Just hot out of the tap.) Rubber gloves are optional. And, I used a wooden spoon for agitating.
SPECIAL NOTE: Please use care when picking the wool for your project. Do not choose superwash wool as this wool is specially treated so that it will not felt.

I've always been scared of felting

Well, then you're going to LOVE this class! I was always afraid of felting as well, which is what initially led me to try felting in the kitchen sink instead of a washing machine. I found that having that control really helped with the fear. And, now, you can't stop me from making felted items. It's so much fun for me now. :yes

I registered too and am so excited. I could never get the hang of tunisian and have never felted anything so this is all new for me. Looking forward to it. Thanks Kim for doing this even though you may kick me out for having "I cant do this tantrums!" LOL

Hi Kim.

I am looking forward to this as I have always wanted to try felting. I have done Tunisian before but not for years so will have to look out my hooks. Think I may have to buy some more! I live in the UK so just a few questions about wool to buy - what size of skeins? I am going to buy some felting wool but would like to try some others as well. Is UK double knitting (medium worsted) too fine for felting? Most Merino I have seen here is DK. I can get worsted equivalent in local shops but not such a variety of colours. I am particularly fond of Shetland wool, being Scottish by birth, but it is a much looser twist than Merino so does that make a difference for felting? Can't wait to start!

Hi, this is my first experience with an online crochet class. I have done traditional crochet but this will be my first time attempting Tunisian crochet. I bought my wool yesterday, but I don't know how an afghan hook differs from a regular hook. Where do I find a k afghan hook? Thanks for your help and I am excited to join the class.:)

I have posted some Tunisian crochet basics at my blog here:

http://kimguzman.wordpress.com/tunisian-crochet/

I've seen afghan hooks at several local retailers like Michaels, Hobby Lobby and JoAnns. I'm not sure whether I've seen them at Walmart.

They can also be purchased online at:

I hope that helps. :)

One other thing I wanted to mention is that, if you have or find a double-ended afghan hook (a long hook with a crochet hook on each end), it will work for this project as well. You'll just want a stopper on one end. I usually wind up a rubber band on one end which works great for me.

I used a K hook for two of the bags and an N hook for one of them just to see what would happen. Using the N hook produced exactly the same result, after felting.

Thanks Kim, I was wondering what size to buy...I don't have any Tunisian hooks, so I'll have to purchase one!

Can I use Wool ease? I have some in my stash. I have been wanting to learn tunisian. Also, I have not been very active on this site, so I am not familiar on how the classes work. Thanks in advance for the information.

You can use Woolease, but since it won't felt, you will either need to start off with a smaller hook or you'll need to line your bag. The bag pattern will certainly work without felting. It would only require some adjustments.
