Mechanic's Snowflake

The interior of this flake reminded me of a pinion (as in rack & pinion) and even the picot clusters could be the meshing teeth of a rack and pinion. A direct PDF download is located here and the complete pattern is also right here:

Materials
Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread #10
Steel hook #7 (1.65mm)
Stiffening medium of choice

Note: Other weights of thread or yarn may be substituted with an appropriate change in hook size (#20 thread and a #11 steel hook may be another good choice).

Stitches Used (American terms):
Ch: chain
Tr: triple crochet
Dc: double crochet
Sc: single crochet
Sl st: slip stitch

Special Stitches
Picot Cluster: (Ch 4, sl st in 4th stitch from hook) 3 times, sl st in base of 1st picot.


Directions:
Ch 10, sl st to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 2, 23 dc into ring, sl st into the beginning ch-2. (24 spokes)

Row 2: Ch 2,
*ch 4, dc into next 4 dc,
Repeat from * 5 more times,
Ch 4, dc into next 3 dc, sl st into 2nd ch of beginning chain. (6 ch-4 loops)

3rd Row: Sl st into 1st ch-4 loop,
Ch 3, tr, ch, picot cluster, ch, 2 tr into same ch-4 loop,
* ch 3, picot cluster, ch 3,
2 tr, ch, picot cluster, ch, 2 tr into next ch-4 loop
Repeat from * 4 more times,
Ch 3, picot cluster, ch 3, sl st into top of beginning ch-3.

Fasten off, work in ends. Use any preferred stiffening method.

That's a pretty snowflake! And yes, it does resemble the rack & pinion! Neato!

Thank you. I'm so glad to have confirmation that someone else thinks it really does 'resemble' a rack and pinion (and that I'm not just seeing things).

Whatever it resembles it's very pretty. No clue what a rack and pinion are.

Thank you so much. You may have heard of rack & pinion steering. Or maybe not. My brother is into cars so I hear lots. Some I understand. Some I don't. But here's an example along with a bit of info.
