Description:
Here is your chance to learn (or practice) Tunisian crochet on a beautiful felted bag. This is an easy project and you can have a bag crocheted and felted in just two days! This class will be like two classes in one -- first, you'll learn and practice Tunisian crochet, then you'll get a step-by-step process in felting by hand. You may be intimidated about felting in a washing machine, like me. So, I've been felting in my kitchen sink! Be careful, though! You probably won't want to stop at just one! As you can see, I made three!

For students allergic to wool, this bag can also be made with a standard acrylic such as Red Heart Super Saver. However, to achieve the same close weave of felted material, you'll need to use a smaller hook. For example, an H hook with Super Saver should give similar results.

Supplies Needed:
  • Three skeins Patons Classic Merino wool. (Three different colors gives you a nice array. I started off with four skeins in four different colors. I was able to get all three of these bags out of those four skeins. You can also pick other feltable wools for your project. I just prefer Patons Classic Merino because of the large color choices and I like the way it felts up.)
  • K afghan hook and K regular crochet hook. A K hook is my preferred afghan hook size for most projects. However, since some of you may not have a K afghan hook, and you may have a different size, I stitched one of these bags with an N afghan hook. I'll bet you can't tell the difference! So, I'm going to say that any afghan hook in the range of K through N is suitable. A cro-hook can also be used on this project simply by attaching a rubber band to one end.
  • Yarn needle. This project has minimal seaming.
  • Felting. Hot water is needed. Liquid dish detergent. A kitchen sink or pail or bucket, bath tub. Anything at all where you can put hot water. (Not boiling! Just hot out of the tap.) Rubber gloves are optional. And, I used a wooden spoon for agitating.
  • SPECIAL NOTE: Please use care when picking the wool for your project. Do not choose superwash wool as this wool is specially treated so that it will not felt.
Class Photo Showcase: Crochetville now has Photo Showcase threads for each class so students can post photos of their finished garments for all the rest of our members and visitors to see. Whenever you finish your class project, please feel free to add your photos to this thread. Please click here for more information about the Photo Showcase threads.

I had thought about this being a problem as well. So, I'm always sure to post in the topic itself about registration being open. And, of course, I always post in my blog.

Once you have posted in a Crochetville thread and have subscribed to it. You can set up your account to receive emails when there are further posts. This way, you would see that there had been a post and know to check it. (I subscribed to this thread and was notified when your post came through.)

I had to pick between the two because of other projects, so I picked this one because it will also make cute Christmas gift bags! And subscriptions are open

Hi Kim,
I brought my yarn which was on sale for this class. but I'm having a very hard time finding a K afghan hook, I do have a J afghan hook but for some reason K afghan hooks are hard to find. Mary Maxim has them so I will have to order from that site if I can't use the J afghan hook I have. Is there any particlur lenght afghan hook we need. Can't wait to start, your classes are always fun.

Kim, I'm very interested in the class but I was wondering if the minimum number of students has been reached (or would be if i signed up )? I don't want to invest in the supplies if it might be canceled. I will probably have to order them, so it seems like a bigger deal to me than it should, probably...if I could just run to the store and pick things up I wouldn't think twice about it.

The other class of yours that I took was very good and I enjoyed it a lot

If you are unable to find a K hook, I would certainly try it with a J hook. Or, at the very least, you could practice with the J hook and see how it works for you. Another alternative is a double-ended hook. If you could find one of those in a size K, it will definitely work. You can just put a rubber band on one end. For this project, you can use a 10" or 14" hook. Either is fine.

I can honestly say that I've never had to cancel a class. And, I haven't received word yet about the number of students signed up. My guess is that you'll be fine. But, perhaps I can get more definitive information from Amy or Donna if you are concerned. I've already written them and will let you know what I hear.

Hi Kim, I did manage to buy a K double ended hook today, I think it is 10 inches long. What a great idea to just put a rubber band on the end of it and turn it into a afghan hook. This saved me the trouble of ordering on line and the shipping cost. Thank you. I will be signing up for this class probably on Friday so save me a seat please. I want to learn how to felt as well as do tunisian crochet.
