Materials:

Size H hook
Worsted Weight Yarn (like Red heart Supersaver yarn) in 2 contrasting colors
(Color A and Color B)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

Finish Sizes: Big square-10”h x 10”w inches, Small Square- 6”h x6”w inches

Different Stitches:

Picot: Ch4, 1 sc in 4th chain from hook.

Notes:

For 6”inch square follow directions for Rnd 1 thru Rnd 6 and the do Alt Rnd7.

On the bigger square the inside square will have an off kilter look to it.

On Rnd 2 you’re working in between the dc on Rnd 1, you should have the right side facing you and be working from the back. Do not work into the picots, the ch1’s should be behind the picots.

Directions:

Rnd1: With Color A Ch5, join with sl st to first chain to form ring, Ch7, sc in 4th chain from hook, [1dc in ring, picot] Do this 7 times, join with sl st to 3rd chain of ch7,
(8dc, 8 picots) (First 3 chains of ch7 count as dc)

Finish off.

Rnd 2: Join Color B with sl st into ring in between any two dc from Rnd 1, ch4, [1 dc in between next two dc from rnd 1 and ch1] Do this 7 times, join with sl st to 3rd chain of ch4.
(8dc, 8-ch1 spaces) (Ch4 counts as dc and ch1 space)

Note: On Rnd 3 when working in dc you’re working through both dcs of Rnd 1 and Rnd 2. The only time your working in just Rnd 2 is when you’re working the 3 dc into the ch1 spaces.

Rnd 3: Sl st in dc of Rnd 1 and in ch1 space of Rnd2, ch3, 3 dc in ch1 space, [1dc in next dc working through both dc on Rnd 1 and Rnd 2, 3 dc in ch1 space of Rnd 2] Do this 7 times, join with sl st to top of ch3.
(32dc) (ch3 counts as dc)

Rnd 4: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next st, [1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next st] Do this 3 times, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, join with sl st to first sc.
(16dc, 16hdc, 12sc, 4-ch2 spaces) (44sts total)

Rnd 5: Ch3, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st, ch1, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st, (1 hdc, ch3, 1 hdc) all in next ch2 space, {1 hdc in next st, [ch1, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st] Do this 5 times, (1 hdc, ch3, 1 hdc) all in next ch2 space} Do this 3 times. 1 hdc in next st, [ch1, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st] Do this 2 times, ch1, join with sl st to 2nd chain of ch3.
(32hdc, 20-ch1 spaces, 4-ch3 spaces) (Beginning ch3 counts as hdc and ch1 space)

Finish off.

Note: On Rnd 6 dc in worked into the skipped sts working behind the ch1’s, the only time your working into Rnd 5 is when your working into hdc (next st) and the ch3 spaces.

Rnd 6: Join Color A with a sl st to any ch3 space, ch1, (1sc, ch2, 1sc) all in same ch3 space, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, [1 dc in skipped st from Rnd 4, 1 sc in next st] Do this 5 times, 1 sc in next st, {(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) all in next ch3 space, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, [1 dc in skipped st from Rnd 4, 1 sc in next st] Do this 5 times, 1 sc in next st} Do this 3 times, join with sl st to first sc.
(40sc, 20dc, 4-ch2 spaces) (60sts total)

If doing 6”inch square do Alt Rnd 7. If you’re not doing 6”inch and are doing 10”inch square do Rnd 7 and follow pattern rest of the way.

AltRnd 7: Ch2, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space, [1 hdc in each of the next 15 sts, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, 1 hdc in each of the next 14 sts, join with sl st to top of ch2.
(76hdc, 4-ch2 spaces) (Beginning Ch2 counts as hdc)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Rnd 7: Ch3, (2dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch2 space, [1 dc in each of the next 15 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, 1 dc in each of the next 14 sts, join with sl st to top of ch3.
(76dc, 4-ch2 spaces) (Ch3 counts as dc)

Rnd 8: Ch6, 1 sc in 4th chain from hook, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space, {1hdc in next st, [picot, skip next st, 1 hdc in next st] Do this 9 times, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space}Do this 3 times, 1hdc in next st, picot, [skip next st, 1hdc in next st, picot] Do this 7 times, join with sl st to 2nd chain of ch6.
(56hdc, 36 picots, 4-ch2 spaces) (First 2 chains of ch6 counts as hdc)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Note: On Rnd 9 dc is work into skipped sts working behind picots. The only time your actually working into Rnd 8 is when you’re working into hdc (next st) and into ch2 spaces.

Rnd 9: Join Color B with sl st to any ch2 space, ch1, (1sc, ch3, 1sc) all in same ch2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, [1 dc in skipped st on Rnd 7, 1 sc in next st ] Do this 9 times, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, {(1 sc, ch3, 1 sc) all in next ch2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, [1 dc in skipped st from Rnd 7, 1 sc in next st] Do this 9 times, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts} Do this 3 times, join with sl st to first sc.
(64sc, 36dc, 4-ch3 spaces) (100sts total)

Rnd 10: Ch3, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space, [1 dc in each of the next 25 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, 1 dc in each of the next 24 sts, join with sl st to top of ch3.
(116dc, 4-ch2 spaces) (Ch3 counts as dc)

Rnd 11: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch2 space, [1 sc in each of the next 29 sts, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, 1 sc in each of the next 26 sts, join with sl st to first sc.
(132sc, 4-ch2 spaces)

Finish off and weave in ends.
