Ladybug Square

Materials:

Worsted Weight yarn in 3 different colors: Red, Black and Green
Size H hook (5.00mm)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

Finish Size: 8”h x 8”w inches

Different Stitches:

Treble Crochet (TC)- Yarn over 2 times insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up a loop, [yarn over, draw through 2 loops] Do this 3 times.

Extended Double Crochet (EDC)-Yarn over, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw thru one loop, yarn over, draw thru two loops, yarn over, draw thru last two loops.


Directions:

Rnd 1: With Red ch4, join with sl st to first chain to form ring, ch2, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc.

Rnd 2: Ch2, 2 dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each of the next 11 sts, 1 dc in joining sl st of Rnd 1 color changing to Black when finishing dc, join with sl st to first dc.
(25dc)

Head: Skip next 2 sts, 7 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts, sl st in next st.

Rnd 3: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as sl st , 1 sc in next st, [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts] Do this 5 times, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch7, sl st in 5th chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 2 chains, 1 sc in next st, ch7, sl st in 5th chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 2 chains, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, join with sl st to first sc.
(35sc plus 2 antennas)

Finish off leaving a very long tail, use tail to embroider line down ladybug’s body and embroider spots.

Rnd 4: Join Green with sl st to back loop of first stitch skipped when doing head, ch4, 2 TC in same back loop, 2 TC in back loop of each of the next 2 skipped sts, 3 TC in back loop of next skipped st, 1 dc in back loop of first sc made on Rnd 3, 1 dc in back loop of next st, [2 dc in back loop of next st, 1 dc in back loop of each of the next 2 sts] Do this 8 times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch4.
(34dc, 10TC) (Beginning ch4 counts as TC)

Note: On the next Rnd you’ll be connecting the head to the square part by working in the back loop of specified stitches together with stitches on Rnd 4. You’ll be doing this by inserting hook in back loop of stitch on head before inserting hook in next stitch on Rnd 4. Do not work thru back loop on head unless noted to. Connecting the head to square keeps the head from curling, I like doing it this way because I can keep on crocheting with out worrying about sewing the head down later. If you have problem with Rnd 5 just try to do AltRnd 5 instead, the alternate rnd will leave the head unattached to the square so you will have to sew it down later.

Rnd 5: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st going thru back loop of 2nd sc from first antenna on head, 1 sc in next st going thru back loop of next sc on head, make sure antennas are on the right side of you work, 1 sc in next st going thru back loop of sc in between antennas, 1 sc in next st going thru back loop of next sc on head, 1 sc in next st going thru back loop of next sc on head, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, (1 EDC, ch3, 1 EDC) all in next st, [1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, (1 EDC, ch3, 1 EDC) all in next st] Do this 3 times, join with sl st to first dc.
(16sc, 16 hdc, 8dc, 8 EDC, 4-ch3 spaces) (48sts total)

AltRnd 5: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, (1 EDC, ch3, 1 EDC) all in next st, [1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, (1 EDC, ch3, 1 EDC) all in next st] Do this 3 times, join with sl st to first dc.
(16sc, 16 hdc, 8dc, 8 EDC, 4-ch3 spaces) (48sts total)

Rnd 6: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 dc in each of the next 10 sts, (2 dc, ch3, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space, [1 dc in each of the next 12 sts, (2 dc, ch3, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, 1 dc in next st, join with sl st to first dc.
(64dc, 4-ch3 spaces)

Rnd 7: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st going thru first antenna, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st going thru other antenna, 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts, (2 dc, ch3, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space, [1 dc in each of the next 16 sts, (2 dc, ch3, 2 dc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, join with sl st to first dc.
(80dc, 4-ch3 spaces)

Rnd 8: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, 1 sc in each of the next 14 sts, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch3 space, [1 sc in each of the next 20 sts, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, join with sl st to first sc.
(96sc, 4-ch2 spaces)

Finish off and weave in ends.
