Baby Celery Top

One of the things I especially like about this pattern is that you can undo the buttons and it opens the neckline up to make it a lot easier to put on the baby.

Size 6 months

G hook
2 skeins Lane Cervinia Madrid yarn (228 yards of any DK weight)
4 buttons (3/4” inch)
Tapestry needle

Measurements:
Front and back: 9 ½” from shoulder to bottom, 9 ¼” across; 4” opening for neck

Foundation chain: Chain 39 stitches

Back:

Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook. 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, ch 1, sk 1 stitch, dc in next 5 stitches. Repeat “pattern” of 5 dc, ch 1, sk 1, 5 dc across to end. Ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Dc in next 4 dc, ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 dc. Repeat “pattern” to end of row. Ch 3, turn.

Rows 3-17: Repeat pattern (approximately 8”). Fasten off. Mark the center 13 stitches from each side. This is where your neck will start its decreases.

Shape Neck:

Row 18: With right side facing and beginning at right end of row, ch 3. DC in next 12 stitches, ch 3 turn. (13 stitches)

Row 19: Dc 2 tog, dc to end, ch 3, turn.

Row 20: Dc in next 12 stitches, ch 3, turn.

Row 21: Repeat Row 19, ch 3, turn.

Row 22: Dc in each stitch across. Fasten off.

Front: Repeat as for back except only for 15 rows (or approximately 7”), fasten off.

Shape Neck:

Repeat as above. Fasten off.

Finishing:

Sew side seams together. 4” up each side or 10 rows.

To add sleeves:

Row 1: With right side facing, starting at the top of the shoulder, sc around the inside of the sleeve. You will need 37 sc in order to have the “pattern” work out correctly. Ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Repeat “pattern” (beg and ending with dcs) to end of first row, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Repeat Row 2 one more time, ch 1, turn.

Fold the back neckline over the front for three stitches only. (You will have 3 stitches of the front underneath three stitches of the back.)

Row 4: Sc around entire sleeve. Fasten off. (You can leave this off if you just want the shoulders completely open but I didn’t like the way they curled up so I did the sc all around connecting the outside edge.)

Repeat for other side.

Sew buttons on. The dcs from the back become the button holes. ¾” buttons fit perfectly.

Repeat on the other side for the second sleeve.

NOTE: You can use this pattern as much as you want for anything that you want but please do not sell the pattern itself or take credit for it (unless it’s full of mistakes – then you can take all the credit you want).

That is really neat. My "baby" is 7 years old, but I do make a lot of baby items for charity. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern with us.
