Lucky Lucy Baby Vest

Materials Needed:

I crochet hook (H crochet hook for headband)
1 skein I Love This Yarn (worsted weight)
Tapestry needle
Two buttons

Gauge: 5 dc = 1 ¼ inches; 2 rows = 1 inch

Size: Newborn to 3 months

Instructions

BACK:

Foundation Row: Chain 35 stitches.

Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, * sk 1, dc in next two stitches; ch 1, sk 1, dc in next two stitches two more times; ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 stitches, * ch 1, repeat * to * to end of row. (35 stitches)
Rows 2-7: Repeat Row 1 (approx. 7” long and 9 ½” wide).

Finish off.

FRONT (make 2):

Foundation Row: Chain 18 stitches.

Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, sk 1, dc in next two stitches; ch 1, sk 1, dc in 5 stitches, ch 1, sk 1 dc in next two stitches, ch 1, sk 1, dc in next two stitches.

Row 2-7: Repeat Row 1. (18 stitches)

SIDE SEAMS:

Sew sides up 3” from bottom.

SHOULDER SEAMS:

Sew shoulder seams 3” in from outside edge.

SLEEVE EDGING:

Row 1: With right side facing, sc around sleeve opening (mine was 30 stitches), beginning at the center of the underarm. Sl st in beg stitch. Do not turn.

Row 2: Sc in back stitch only all the way around the arm. Sl st in beg stitch. Do not turn. (30 stitches)

Row 3: Repeat Row 2. Sl st in beg stitch and finish off. (30 stitches)

(Long sleeves can also be made on this little cardigan by either using the sc in the back stitch only or using the stitch pattern from the body until the sleeves are approximately 6 ½” long.)

BODY EDGING:

Row 1: With right side facing and beginning at the base of the left front, sc all the way up the left side (23 stitches was my count) in the back loops only, put 3 sc in the corner stitch. Sc around the neck (26 stitches) with 3 sc in the corner stitch. Continue down the right front with another 23 stitches. Ch 3 sc in corner stitch and continue in this manner around the bottom, sides and neck for a total of three rows (with 3 sc in each corner stitch as you go around). Finish off.

Note: I worked the buttonholes into the last row on the right side by sc down 11 stitches, ch 3, sc in next stitch. Crochet 3 more sc and ch 3, sc in next stitch and then completed it the rest of the way around to finish off. If you prefer you could put two buttonholes in the button band on the second row by just ch 2, sk 2, in the same position.

HEADBAND: (Use an H hook to make this)

This headband is wide so that it could actually cover baby’s ears but if you want it narrower, simply leave off the second row of pattern stitches.

Foundation Row: Ch 57 stitches, sl st together to form ring. Ch 2 (counts are first dc). Do not turn.

Row 1: dc in second stitch, ch 1, sk 1, repeating pattern from above (3 sets of dc, sk 1, 5 dc, etc.)

Row 2: Repeat Row 1.

Row 3: Sc all the way around. Finish off.

Original pattern designed by Bev Matheson (beverooni@hotmail.com - www.bevmatheson.blogspot.com)

NOTE: This pattern is free. You can do anything you want with it other than actually sell the pattern as your own. Please let me know if you have any questions.
