Hula Skirt Can Cozy

I created this pattern for the Flower Swap. I'd made a little bun cover that turned out to be too small for my Wad o' Hair (tm) but was the perfect size to slip over a can as a cozy. I just added some fringe and flowers to the top, and Bob's your uncle!

I don't have the wherewithal to post pics, but Michele, who is just adorable said that she'd take a picture of her cozy in action and post it later on in the thread.

This is the first pattern I've ever written out, so be warned.

Hula Skirt Can Cozy, by Ann (13bodies)

Materials:

Size 10 crochet cotton, green. Will hold 2 strands tog throughout (I used Aunt Lydia’s Double Strand in Myrtle/Parrot Green)
Small amount brightly colored crochet cotton for flowers
Size B hook
1 hair elastic; the thin size works best
Tapestry needle
Spray starch, plastic bag, rubber band

Ch 3 counts as first dc throughout; join after ea round

Skirt:
Rnd 1: ch 4, 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, join in top of beg ch (12 dc)

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in same st; inc in each dc around (24 dc)

Rnd 3: ch 3, inc in next dc (dc in next dc, inc next dc) around. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2 throughout), sk next st, dc in next dc (ch 2, sk next st, dc in next dc) around, join in 3rd ch or beg ch 5 (18 dc)

Rnd 5: sl st into first ch 2 sp, ch 5; dc into same ch 2 sp; inc in every 3rd ch 2 sp around (24 dc, 24 sp)

Rnd 6: sl st into first ch 2 sp, ch 5, dc in next ch 2 sp, (ch 2, dc in next ch 2 space) around.

Rnd 7-12: Repeat Rnd 6.

Rnd 13: sl st into first ch 2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 2, sc in next ch 2 space) around. (24 sc, 24 sp)

Rnd 14: working rather loosely, ch 1, sl st around post of first sc of Rnd 13, ch 1, sl st around post of next sc around. Join to first sl st.

Rnd 15: ch 1; working over elastic band, 2 sc in each ch 2 sp around. Join, end off green.

Make fringe: slip cozy onto can and cut lengths of green cotton that are twice as long as the distance from the top of the cozy to the table. (you’ll need about 192 pieces of thread.) Fasten 4 lengths of thread to each st of Rnd 14 with a lark’s head knot. Trim as needed.

Flowers (Make 12):
Ch 7, sc in 7th ch from hook (ch 6, sc in beg ch) x 4. Join, end off.

Sew flowers around waistband of skirt. Slip skirt on can. Wrap plastic bag around skirt under the flowers and fasten in place with a rubber band. Spray the flowers with spray starch and block. Remove when dry.

Notes:
--You can easily make the cozy part solid by substituting 2 dc for each ch 2 sp.
--The elastic does make it a bit hard to get the cozy on the can and isn’t strictly necessary; once Rnd 14 has been made it will stay up on its own. However, the elastic makes it much more secure.
--I crochet tightly and a size B hook may be too large for some. The first 3 rnds should just be large enough to cover the silver circle at the bottom of the can. Use the proper sized hook to make gauge.

Ann,

Thanks so much for the pattern! I love mine. In fact - I am using it right now on a glass of soda! It looks like it will fit a lot of different sized items - cans, bottles, and glasses - because it has some stretch to it. I was hoping for the pattern.

That is so fun! I think I will make some for a group of women I go camping with. Now if I could figure out how to attach the friendship bra posted on the board, it could be a set! Aloha!
