Squid Purse

ok, here goes, and i hope it's clear enough to use...=]

squid purse

finished size (about 10" long)
materials:
2 colors pink ww acrylic or yarn of choice (i used less than half a 3oz skein in each color)
if you want a bigger one i'd imagine using 2 yarns together and a k hook would work too...
"I" crochet hook or whatever size you want...lol (i dont think in something like this guage is important...lol)

5 buttons, or one button and 2 googly eyes (used a white and black button for each eye, and a pink one for the closure)

stitches :
chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet .
most of this piece is worked in joined rounds.

instructions:
(keeping in mind i cant read patterns so you'd notice, i hope this works...=])

main body:
row1. ch 4, ss together to form ring
row2. ch 2, hdc 14 in ring, ss tog.
row3. ch2 hdc around, incr every other stitch. (ie. one hdc in one stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch all the way around) ss tog.
row4.-row9. ch2, hdc around, ss tog. repeat.
row10.-row17. ch2, 17 hdc, ch2, turn. repeat. (on last row, ch 4, attach (ss) to opposite corner to continue working in rounds)
row18. ch2, hdc around (including on chain from previous row) ss tog.
row19.-row 28. ch 2, hdc around decr every 3rd stitch. ss tog. repeat. (ie, do 2 normal hdc, and in the 3rd (and 4th) stitches, make a decrease.)(basically youre going for the "conehead look" you just need to end up with a point at the top, and if it takes a few more or less rows to work it out, no big deal...) finish off (and yes at this point it does look alot like a mutated ballet slipper...lol)

purse flap:
i attach everything with crochet, but you can always sew it on too... using same color as body:
row1. starting at the larger end of the opening, sc across the bottom edge of the opening (i overlapped 2 stitches on each end to make the flap a bit wider, just worked around the other stitches, ended up with 11 stitches across ) ch 2, turn
row2.-row10. 11hdc across, ch2 turn, repeat. finish off after last row.

fin thingies:
use same color as body.
row1. starting at the point, insert hook, ss, then going down one side work 1ss, one sc, one hdc, 3 dc,and 4 trch. ch1, and turn
row2. sc back up to point, and repeat row 1.
row3. sc back to point, and finish off.

accents:
using 2nd color...
fin accents:
attach at the top of the point with a ss, then sc down the front of the middle of the point. when you reach the bottom of the fins, turn and go around just under the base of the fins. when you reach the end, turn and sc back up the sc line back up to the point. go over the top, and sc straight down the back, ch1 turn, and back up to the point. ch 2, and hdc down the fin on one side, ch1, and sc back up to point, and repeat down other side. finish off.

"collar":
using 2nd color...
row 1. attach accent color at base of purse flap, and sc all the way around, join with ss.
row 2. ch2, hdc around, join with ss,
row3. ch2, hdc around, join with ss, finish off.
(and yes, at this point it kinda resembles "naughty bits")

tentacles:
using 2nd color:
attach yarn into "ring" at the bottom, ch 10, ss back up to top, and attach to ring with 1sc. ch 10, repeat 7 more times, then ss, and finish off.

using original color:
long tentacles:
i used the crochet cording for these, but you can chain 30, and ss back up... otherwise, attach on one side of the smaller tentacles, do 30 stitches of cording, ch 1, and turn. sc 6, and finish off. repeat on other side.

strap:
using accent color
crochet cording as long as you want it, attached to the sides just under the fins, or ch desired number, and sc back down, and attach end, finish off (or for a thicker strap, combine both colors...)

closure:
there are several choices... make a loop or buttonhole, attach ties, or i sewed both corners of the flaps together to make a loop to put around the button. attach eyes on opposite side from closure, and enjoy!

Too CUTE! I can see using the same body as a Lobester and then making some claws. THis would probably sell well in a coastal town during tourist season.
