Valentine for the 'Ville -- Free Scarf Pattern

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2688/Scarf.jpg

No motifs to join -- just crochet! This pattern is not tested, but I'm going to make another one right now (using the pattern). This will be the 3rd one I'm getting from a 7 oz. skein of Red Heart (red) and scraps of white.

Using a size I or 9 hook and red worsted weight yarn, ch 165 (each heart is 11 stitches wide; there are 15 hearts).

Row 1: Ch 2 to serve as first dc. Dc in each of next 164 ch. 165 stitches in row. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Allow turning ch to serve as first st in row. Dc, trc, dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, trc, dc, hdc in next 10 stitches. * Hdc, dc, trc, dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, trc, dc, hdc in next 11 stitches. * Repeat between * to end. Fasten off.

Row 3: Turn piece upside down. With wrong side of Row 1 facing you, attach yarn to end of foundation chain. Ch 2 to serve as first dc. Dc in each of next 164 stitches. 165 stitches in row. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Allow turning ch to serve as first st in row. Sc, sc, hdc, dc, trc, dc, hdc, sc, sc, sc in next 10 stitches. * Sc, sc, sc, hdc, dc, trc, dc, hdc, sc, sc, sc in next 11 stitches. * Repeat between * to end. Fasten off.

Edging: With right side of Row 2 facing you, attach white around the last stitch in Row 1. Ch 2; 2 hdc in same space. * 2 hdc in next st (the ch 2 that served as the first stitch in Row 2 for the top of this first heart; the first hdc in the top the subsequent hearts). Hdc in next st (a dc). 3 hdc in next st (a trc). Hcd in next 2 st (a dc and a hdc). 3 hdc over next st (the sc that forms the “valley” of the top of the heart; you are working the 3 hdc's into the same st that the sc was worked). Hdc in next 2 st (a hdc and a dc). 3 hdc in next st (a trc). Hdc in next st (a dc). 2 hdc in next st (a hdc). 3 hdc around post of stitch in Row 1 immediately below hdc in Row 2 where you just did 2 hdc. 3 hdc around post of dc one row below and immediately to the left of the post around which you just worked 3 hdc. Turn piece upside down. 2 hdc in first sc that begins the bottom of the next heart. Hdc in next 4 st (a sc, a sc, a hdc, and a dc). 3 hdc in next st (the trc that forms the bottom point of the heart). Hdc in next 4 st (a dc, a hdc, a sc, a sc). 2 hdc in next st (the sc that ends the bottom of the heart). 3 hdc around post of stitch in Row 3 immediately below sc in Row 4 where you just did 2 hdc. 3 hdc around post of dc one row below and immediately to the left of the post around which you just worked 3 hdc. Turn piece upside right.

Continue this pattern from *, ending with 2 hdc in the last stitch at the top of the last heart. 3 hdc around the last stitch in Row 1. 3 hdc around the last stitch in Row 3. Continue with the pattern all the way back across the scarf. Remember that you are now working on the wrong sides of Rows 2 and 4. Make sure your edging stitches correspond with the tops of the appropriate stitches in Rows 2 and 4. End with 3 hdc around the last post in Row 3 and join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2 that began the edging. Fasten off.

Happy Valentine's Day!
