Baby Poncho Pattern

Baby Poncho.

I cant tell you how much yarn you will need as I used some I had hanging around the place but I imagine if you allow about 150grams it should be plenty.
I used 8ply and a 4.5mm hook. You will need to translate this to your sizes.
The pattern is written in US terms.

Abbreviations:

CH = Chain, DC = Double Crochet, SS = Slip stitch, SP= Space, STS = Stitches.

Make 60 chain and join with a slip stitch to make a big loop, taking care not to twist.

Row 1: 4 ch (to stand as 1 DC and 1 CH), 1 DC into base of CH, * miss 1 CH, 1 DC, 1CH, 1DC into next CH, * continue from * to * to the end of the row. Join with a SS into 3rd of 4 CH at the beginning of the row. 30 V STS

Row 2: SS into the first 1 CH SP, 4 CH, 1 DC into same SP. Work 1 V ST onto each of the next 6 1 CH spaces,* Work 1 DC, 1 CH, 1 DC, 1 Ch, 1 DC, 1CH, 1 DC into the next V ST*, work 1 V ST into next 14 V STS, Repeat *to * then work 1 V ST into each of the next 7 1 CH spaces. Join with a SS into the 3rd of the 4 ch at beginning.

This last row forms the pattern and is continued to the length required. There will be 4 extra V STS in each round thus forming the points of the Poncho.

You can put a shell pattern around the edge by working 1 SC into the 1st 1 CH SP, * 1 DC, 1 CH 5 times into next SP, 1 DC into same SP, 1 SC into next 1 CH SP* Repeat * to * around the edge, being creative when you get to the increases at the two points. Fasten off and finish off any ends. Because I had 2 different Batch lots of yarn, I put 1 round of a contrast yarn so the colour difference would not be so obvious. You could also put a fringe if you wanted to and leave the shell pattern off. The loops are there for you to hook the fringe into.

The neck can be left how it is or you could work a round of SC on the neck with a row of eyelets to thread a cord through then another row of SC.
Make the cord by crocheting the thread double and making some little bobbles on the ends so the cord does not pull out.

Baby Ponch Pattern No 2.

Materials:
I used 8ply and a 4mm hook.
If you allow at least 200gms you should have enough.
This pattern is ideal for using up small amounts of leftovers.

Abbreviations:
CH = Chain, SL ST = Slip Stitch, DC = Double Crochet, SP = Space.

CH 96 and join with a SL ST to form a ring, making sure it is not twisted.

Row 1: (Foundation row)
CH 3 (stands as first DC at the start of each row) 1DC into each of the next 2CH, *CH1, miss 1CH, 1DC into each of the next 3CH,* Repeat * to * to end of round where you will finish last repeat with CH1, miss 1CH, join with a SL ST to the top of CH3 from the start of the row. (24 groups of 3DC with CH1 between)

Row 2:
Turn and work a SL ST into the first SP, CH3, 2DC into same SP, (CH1, 3DC into next SP,) repeat ( to ) 3 times more, CH1, 3DC, CH3, 3DC into next SP (This is the first point of the Poncho.) (CH1, 3DC into next SP) repeat ( to ) 10 times more, Repeat 3DC, CH3, 3DC into next SP (This is the second point of the Poncho.), (CH1, 3DCinto next SP) repeat ( to )5 times more, CH1, SL ST into top of CH3. (11 groups on each side of the Points.) Next row will have 12 each side and so on.

Repeat this row keeping the points in the same place and working 3DC into each extra SP created on each row.

Change colour when you want, being sure to join back in to the same place as you would have SL ST to.

I would suggest making it long enough to hang to the elbows, on the straight sides.
You can make an edging on the neck if you wish or make a drawstring like I used to back in the 80s.
If you wanted to, you could do the last couple of rows with your fancy yarn, on a larger hook. You will not have too much problem because you are working into spaces, not the tops of stitches.
Another trim could be a fringe or a Shell pattern.
It is very basic and simple but please, feel free to ask if you have any problems.

I made mine with 4 ply baby Econo yarn and it took about 5 oz of yarn maybe? The skein was a 6 oz and I still have over an ounce left but it does depend on how large you want to make it. I made mine to fit my 18 month old but I tried it on my 2 1/2 yr old neice and it fit her too, lol
