some people...

I subscribe to Crochet World, and last month in the section where you can send request (forget what it's called). There was a letter from a 92 year old woman who said she had sent many people patterns in the past from the column, and never once received a thank you or postage costs. It made me sad to think our world was like this..that someone couldn't simply write a thank you note. So, I sat down and wrote her a letter. Today, to my surprise, I received a lovely note for her saying that she has received many letters from people and it has restored her faith. I am so glad that others, like me, have hearts..when so many don't. Anyway, she also sent me a few scrubbie patterns and I will cherish them. I plan to send her another note tomorrow, but her birthday is coming up in late June. So, I was hoping that you lovely women would have some ideas as to what I could make for her? She crochets and knits. And I crochet, knit, cross stitch, scrapbook, bake..whatever. I just want something creative and something she will use, you know? Any ideas??

Donna

How about a shawl!? I think she would love to have one. I just completed on from LB suede that's on my blog, but there are a lot of lovely patterns out there that I think would be great.

I think yarn is a good idea, She is probably on a fixed income and yarn has gotten to be so expensive. If she crochets and knits herself it would probably be the most appreciated thing I can think of. Shame she had to complain before anyone remembered to say thankyou.

She might not have a computer either.. How about making up a binder full of patterns from the web and put them in the page protectors. This way she is getting some new patterns her self and she can pass them on to her grandchildren as well..

I also think a shawl would be wonderful - if you want to put that kind of time/money into it. I'm not sure what you're looking at in terms of those. Lapghan maybe? Those are big projects too though...

Thank you, everyone, for your ideas. I am not quite sure what I'm going to make yet. Time and money really isn't an issue, I mean when it's made for someone special, it doesn't matter. I mean I can't spend a whole LOT of money, you know what I mean. I'm thinking a shawl or lapghan would be nice. I mean, if she's like us, she doesn't make things for herself, lol. I'll let ya'll know

donna, that is a wonderful thing you did, i like the idea of maybe more than one person sending her some lovely birthday gifts. lets all try and raok her with some little things that she can use. even a skein of yarn would be awesome as i know she probably is on a fixed income. i also think that we should tell her about this great place, cause ya know what, she just might have a computer stranger things have happened. i talked to a lady tonight at the rehab center who was there visiting mil's roommate. she is 85, and teaches computers to seniors so ya just never know, hehehehe. lets suprise this wonderful woman who has shared so much. i know how she feels too,as i also have sent hundreds of patterns out, and only recieved 1 thank you. over the years, and she offerend to send me the postage and copy cost, told her thank you, she was sweet, but it was alright but it is nice to know there are sweet people like you left in the world vicki

An RAOK for her sounds wonderful!! Her birthday is June 25th, so if you would like her address please send me an email, either on my yahoo email or through the forum.

P.S. I don't think she has a computer, the letter she wrote to me was done on a typewriter and she made corrections with a pen. You are right though, you never know!

Please include me in anything we can do to show this wonderful soul how special she really is. That there are groups of people like ourselves that share with each other and offer support and kindness.

I would love to put a little something together for her also for bday.

Keep us posted.
Love and Blessings,
Mary

count me in! i'd love to send her a RAOK now and a b-day card a little later. just think how much fun it will be for her if she gets tons a cards from all over the country and then internationals too!
i think we should try and get everyone to send at least a card.

please PM me her addy so i can get some yarn in the mail
think i'll post about this little project on my blog... as long as there are no objections??? i'm guessing she had her address in the magazine so i shouldn't be a problem for me to privately email it to those who might ask for it from my site/

Count me in as well please.

I think we all know what it feels like to not be thanked for giving something handmade or just giving something.

Could someone please send me a web site for
"Crochet World". None of the stores around here carry any more crochet magazines

How about if you tell us her birthday and give us her regular mailing address, and those of us that would like to, send her a birthday card for her birthday along with a little token. Maybe a pattern, a hook, a bookmark, some tea or just something small to let her know there are crocheters out there who appreciate other crocheters. It's just a thought.

I just wanted to thank each of you for your kind heart and warm spirit! I just know she is going to love all of your thoughts and gifts. I can't wait to get mine finished and in the mail

Donna

If you would still like her address, please send me a private message. I do not want to post it in "public"

Donna, That was such a sweet thing that you did. Our elderly population is growing and there are a lot of people out there like your new friend....I don't know her circumstances, but I know quite a few around here who are pretty much alone, if they're lucky enough to live so long. Trouble is that most of their friends and close family have gone on before them when they get to be in their 90's. I'm sure that the letters from you and the others meant a great deal to her. My MIL's church congregation did a nice thing. One of the ladies knew of an older woman, turning 90, I think....so the pastor asked that anyone and everyone who would like to do so, to send her a birthday card. Didn't have to be anything fancy, it was more about the wishes and showing that you care. Many of the cards were note Cards that were sent on and many of the senders did not know the lady, personally. (Myself, included.) I think this would be a nice idea for this lady, maybe just birthday wishes and tell her a little about ourselves and our crocheting, maybe where we live. Since many elderly people don't feel safe giving out their address maybe Donna could receive our cards (we provide our own postage, of course) and then Donna would be the only one to have to have her address and could mail them on for those of us who would like to send something. What do you think?
