Striped Boy's Hat

This comes in reply to a request for the "pattern" for a couple of striped fold-up boy's hats I posted on the "Show-and-Tell" section and which you can see below. I made these hats for two young boys, ages probably 5 and 7 (but was told by their step-grandma that they have "big" heads...). I just measured one of them around the widest part and it's approx. 20 1/2" wide but will easily stretch a couple of inches. If you'd like to make this bigger here's what I suggest: 1) Use a bigger hook. 2) Do the opposite and use a smaller hook but increase on row 7 too. 3) Use a bulky yarn (or 2 strands held together) and a bigger hook, naturally, you'll get an even warmer hat this way too.

STRIPED BOY'S HAT

Materials:

- WW acrylic yarn in 3 colors which I'll call MC (main color), TS (thin stripe) and WS (wide stripe). I used Red Heart Super Saver "Grey Heather" as MC, "Black" for TS, and "Cherry Red" and "Delft Blue" for WS.

- Hook size G or H.

Gauge: First 2 rounds = 2".

Round 1: Ch. 3, 9 dc in 3rd ch. from hk, join. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch. 2, dc in same space, 2 dc in n. (next) and ea. st. around, join. (20 dc)
Round 3: " ", 2 dc in n. st, *(1 dc in n. st., 2 dc in n. st), rep. from * around, join. (30 dc)
Round 4: " ", dc in n. st., 2 dc in n. st, *(1 dc in n. 2 st., 2 dc in n. st.), rep. from * around, join. (40 dc)
Round 5: Ch. 2, dc in n. 2 st., 2 dc in n. st, *(1 dc in n. 3 st., 2 dc in n. st.), rep. from * around, join. (50 dc)
Round 6: Ch. 2, dc in n. 3 st., 2 dc in n. st., *(1 dc in n. 4 st., 2 dc in n. st.), rep. from * around, join. (60 dc).
Round 7: Ch. 2, dc in ea. st. around, join.
Round 8-16:
Rep. Row 7.
From this point on you will work on the "wrong" side of the hat (so when you make the fold the stitches on the stripes look "right"):
Round 17: Join TS, ch. 1, sc in ea. st. around, join & fasten off (J&FO).
Round 18: Join WS, ch. 2, dc in ea. st. around, J&FO.
Round 19: Join TS, ch. 1, sc in ea. st. around, J&FO.
Round 20: Join MC, ch. 2, dc in ea. st. around, join.
Round 21: Ch. 1, sc in ea. st. around, J&FO, weave in ends.

TO MAKE THE ADULT VERSION:

Gauge: First 2 rounds = 2 1/4"-2 1/2" (Not all ww yarn has the same thickness, the thicker the yarn, the bigger the resulting stitches will be).

Suggested hook size: I

NOTE: For the bulky yarn hat on Post # 39 (page 4) switch to WS on last stitch of Round 4, then switch back to MC at end of Round 7 and continue until end of Round 15, switching again to WS for 3 more rows; do one last row of dc with MC (omit sc row - 19 rows total).

Since this is the first pattern I post I will naturally like to hear from anyone who tries it and hopefully see pics of your finished hats. Also, even though I think this pattern is pretty simple, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

I'm now trying to make one in "Camouflage" with a 'solid' black stripe (2 rows of dc) for a teenager, wish me luck!

I'm glad someone will benefit from this simple pattern. They say "necessity is the mother of invention" and I searched and searched and didn't find one single free crochet pattern for this fold-up type and at first was disappointed but then told myself I didn't need a pattern, I just looked for images of knit hats for ideas of color combinations that would allow me to use yarn I already had and went to work. I hope to someday learn enough to be able to actually design some nice things so I see this as a start.

I'm almost done with the hat for the teenager, I found my best option for enlarging this pattern and still use RHSS was to use an "I" hook (I might've really used a "G" for those in the pics...). I need to do a little frogging to adjust the length, I'm pretty sure I only need one more row in the MC (before the stripe) to make it a little longer instead of the two I added.

NOTE: After I got the measurement of the future owner's head (22") and tried it on myself (mine's 21 1/2") Irealized I didn't need any extra rows at all before the stripe because using the "I" hook increased the size in every direction, in fact, after I frogged several rows I switched to an "H" because it was a little too wide before.
