Cluster Cross Bookmark

This is a little something I came up with a few months ago and posted recently in the "Show-and-Tell". The green one was my "guinea pig", it's a little smaller because I used a smaller hook size but also the sides are shorter. When I was making the ecru one I decided to add one more row on each side and wrote the pattern accordingly. I plan to add a tassel to it eventually to lengthen it because I think it makes it easier to find the page.

CLUSTER CROSS BOOKMARK

http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n...sBookmarks.jpg

Size: Approx.7" x 5" and6" x 4" (before tassel).

Materials: #10 thread, #7 or 8 hook.

Abreviations: lp=loop, ch=chain, sc=single crochet, dc=double crochet, CL=cluster**
, x=times, sl st=slip stitch (sl st), hk=hook, n=next, rep=repeat, FO=fasten off, WIE=weave in ends.

**[yo, insert hk in ch-1 sp & pull up a lp, yo & draw through 2 lps on hk) 3x, yo & draw through all 4 loops on hk]

Ch 10.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch. from hk, *ch 1, sk n. ch, sc in n. ch, rep. from * accross (9 st), ch 3, turn. Mark this row as right side.
Row 2: Work Cl in n. ch-1 sp, *ch 1, work Cl in n. ch-1 sp; rep. from *accross, dc in last sc (4 Cl). Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: sc in 1st dc, ch 1, *sc in n. ch-1 sp (between Cls), ch 1; rep. from * accross, sc on top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4-34: Rep. Rows 2 & 3, FO & WIE.

1st side:

Turn strip to wrong side.
Row 1: With strip placed horizontally, fasten thread on with sl st in middle of dc on Row 22, sc, *ch 1, sc on sc on side, ch 1, sc on middle of n. dc; rep from * once (ending on sc).
Row 2: Do as Row 2 above.
Row 3: Do as Row 3 above.
Rows 4-9: Rep. Rows 2 & 3; FO & WIE

2nd side:

Turn "cross" with right side facing you with 1st side at the bottom. Fasten thread with sl st this time on sc on side opposite to where 1st side ended and follow instructions for 1st side from then on.

Tassel:(Optional)

Cut a piece of cardboard to measure approx. 2" x 2" (I used a small eyeshadow case!). Cut a 2" piece of thread and position it horizontally on top edge of cardboard square (so when thread is wrapped it will sit on top of it). Wrap thread vertically (with end at the bottom) 15-20 times, then cut thread off. Tie the 2" piece of thread at the top and knot tightly then slip thread off cardboard & place scissors inside loop & cut so you have two even sides. Cut another piece of thread approx. 5" long & place 1/4" from top of tassel & holding by the middle wrap around 3 or 4 times, then tie. Pull each side of this thread inside this "tie" with hook (so it looks like another strand in the fringe. Trim ends to even out.

Using hook, pull each end of the top thread securing the tassel into the chain at the center of the bottom of the cross and weave in to each side to secure.

To stiffen I dilute approx. 1/2 tsp. cornstarch in 1/4 C. water, bring to a boil and remove from heat when it thickens (can be done in microwave). When mixture is cool enough to handle dip bookmark in it until well saturated, stretch if necessary to shape properly. I hang mine on an indoor line and then gently stretch again to reshape but they can be allowed to dry by setting them on wax paper.

Thank you, I know the pics are not very good. I tried taking another one and one close up hoping the clusters could be seen better but they still didn't come out so good..., here they are:
