Snowflake Trio

I created this trio of snowflakes last year. I used size 10 crochet thread and a size 7 steel crochet hook. Each one is about 3 inches from point to point. The pattern for the bottom snowflake is altered slightly from the original to give the points of the snowflake better definition.

Abbreviations:

Ch = chain
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
DC = double crochet
TC = triple crochet
Sl St = slip stitch
SCD = single crochet decrease

Special Stitch Instructions:

Single Crochet Decrease:
Insert hook in stitch and pull up loop, insert hook in next stitch and pull up loop, work off all 3 loops on hook at once.

Instructions for Top Left Snowflake:

Ch 6 & join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3. [Total of 12 dc]

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same stitch, *2 dc in next dc,* repeat around ending with sl st in top of ch 3. [Total of 24 dc]

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in same stitch, *hdc & dc in next stitch, tc in next stitch, dc & hdc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch*, repeat around ending with hdc & dc in next stitch, tc in next stitch, dc & hdc in next stitch, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 4: Ch 1, *sc in each sc, ch 1, hdc in hdc, ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1, tc in tc, ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1, hdc in hdc, ch 1*, repeat around ending with sl ts in 1st sc.

Round 5: Ch 1, do scd in 2 sc, *ch 4, skip hdc & sc in dc, ch 4, sc in tc, ch 4, sc in dc, ch 4, skip hdc and do scd in 2 sc*, repeat around ending with sl st in 1st scd. Fasten off. Starch and block.

Instructions for Top Right Snowflake:

Ch 5 and Join with sl st in 1st ch to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 8 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch3. [Total of 9 dc]

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same stitch, *2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around & join with a sl st in top of ch 3. [Total of 18 dc]

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 2, dc in next stitch, ch 2, sc in each of next 2 stitches*, repeat around ending with ch 2, dc in next stitch, ch 2, sc in next stitch, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in dc, ch 3, sc in next 2 sc*, repeat around ending with ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in dc, ch 3, sc in next sc, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 4 sc in dc, ch3 (dc, ch 3, dc) in top loop, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 4, sc in next 2 sc*, repeat around ending with ch 4, sc in dc, ch 3 (dc, ch 3, dc) in top loop, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 4 sc in next sc, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 4, sc in sc, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in top loop, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 3, sc in sc, ch 4, sc in next 2 sc*, repeat around ending with ch 4, sc in sc, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 3, (dc, ch 3, dc) in top loop, ch 3, sc in dc, ch 3, sc in sc, ch 4 sc in next sc, join with sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off. Starch & block.

Instructions for Bottom Snowflake:

Ch 5, join with sl st in 1st ch to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 8 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3. [Total of 9 dc]

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same stitch, *2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around ending with sl st in top of ch 3. [Total of 18 dc]

Round 3: Repeat Round 2. [Total of 36 dc]

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc in same stitch, ch 1, dc in next stitch, ch 1, tc in next 2 stitches, ch 1, dc in next stitch, ch 1, hdc in next stitch, *hdc in next stitch, ch 1, dc in next stitch, ch 1, tc in next 2 stitches, ch 1, dc in next stitch, ch 1, hdc in next stitch*, repeat * * 4 more times, join with sl st in 1st hdc.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *ch 4, sc in 1st tc, ch 3, sc in 2nd tc, ch 4, sc in each hdc*, repeat around ending with ch 4, sc in 1st tc, ch 3, sc in 2nd tc, ch 2, dc in 1st hdc. (This ending puts thread in position for start of next round.)

Round 6: *Ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 4, (sc, ch 3, sc) in top loop, ch 4, sc in next loop*, repeat 5 times ending with sl st in top of dc of previous round.

Round 7: Sl st to center of ch 3 loop, sc in loop, ch 3, sc in next loop, **ch 3, (dc, ch3, dc) in top loop, *ch 3, sc in next loop* 3 times**, repeat ** ** around ending with *ch 3, sc in next loop* twice, ch 3, join with sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off. Starch and block.

[The original Round 7 called for a (sc, ch 3, sc) in top loop. You may use whichever method you prefer.]

Lovely, all of a similar density/lacy pattern but with very definite individual characteristics

Thank you for the patterns. I love to make snowflakes. I'll be working on these soon. Going to have LOTS of snowflakes for next winter.
